PowerUp senses the current at the main breaker and then manages appliances to keep the current below 80% of its feeder rating as required by the National Electrical Code (NEC). PowerUp events occur when the breaker feeding SPAN nears its service rating. Homeowners can opt-in/out, and manage circuit priorities, although SPAN recommends prioritizing large appliances with minimal disruption.
